BIRDLIFE: HOODED PLOVERS AND PIED OYSTERCATCHERS

Kangaroo Island has extraordinary birdlife diversity with land, shore based and pelagic species.

Birds Australia is Australia’s preeminent ornithological society for promoting knowledge and protection of Australian birdlife.

The beach below both retreats is home to two very special bird species being the hooded plover and the pied oystercatcher, both species mating for life with the same partner.

Both species form a shallow nest just above the high tide mark and lay their eggs, camouflaging them with weed.

Over the summer months, the chicks hatch and if you watch carefully you may see the parents guide the chicks to the shore line, particularly at first and last light, to feed.

At night, if you listen carefully, you can hear the parents calling.
